1/08/20 - Worlds Apart - 1 - Faith vs. Science?

This is the start of a new series on a pretty interesting topic: the relationship between science and faith. It’s called Worlds Apart, and it’s designed to help students discover that these two worlds or categories may not be as far from each other as perhaps they’ve been led to believe.

Scripture:  GENESIS 1:1
Main Point: Science and faith can exist in the same space.

DISCUSSION QUESTIONS
  1. Why do you think for a lot of people science and faith feel like opposites? 
  2. Do you ever feel like you have to choose between faith and science? If so, what are some examples?
  3. How would you feel if some of your biggest questions were never answered?
  4. Has there ever been a time you felt like science affirmed your faith? 
  5. Read Genesis 1:1. What questions come to mind when you hear this verse? (Leaders—remember that the goal ISN’T to answer your students’ questions, but to help them practice verbalizing their questions.)
  6. If you know that science and faith can exist in the same space, how could that change the way you . . . 
    1. Approach the Bible?
    2. Approach a science textbook or science class?
  7. How can asking questions about science and the Bible actually help you grow and learn more about your faith?
  8. How did you apply what you learned last week and who did you tell? (From the lesson / I will statement)
  9. What is your “I Will” statement this week? (In one sentence, What will you do with what you’ve learned today: “I will _________”) Please write them down to refer to them the following week.
